Strong Body, Strong Mind

I used to say that resistance training is a form of meditation. I continue to view it that way. Requiring a perfect blend of concentration and clarity, this discipline of the mind trickles into other areas of your life. It keeps a person grounded — focused on productivity as opposed to consumption. The endorphins released during exercise also play an important role in recognizing the beauty this world has to offer. And you’re happier as a result of it.

So, are the countless hours of weight training, and strength training in general worth it? Only someone who does it, not just ponders on it, knows the answer to that question. Either way, few would argue that benefits aren’t derived from working out consistently. And it should never become an obsession. Regular actions need to be taken, yes. Sacrifices should be made. But bodybuilding (both competitive and recreational) isn’t a black hole, contrary to the belief of many.

You can have fun in the process of shaping your body. This level of enthusiasm (call it listening to your heart) will shape your mind, too. It strengthens it. It allows it (and, in turn, you) to be assertive when necessary. It helps you realize that winning isn’t the point; and that the point, instead, is being who you are. You can make contributions to others far greater than those that were intended for you. You can change things. But to do this, you need a strong mind.

The will is there. Intuition is present. Now, it’s time to work. Develop your physique so long as you’re able to; it’s a powerful gateway to that potentially strong mind of yours. In other words, strengthen the body and the mind will follow.
